FEATURE ARTICLE

How to Create an Audio CD
by David Steele and Jeff Herring
In this article we cover five steps to creating an audio CD for promoting your
practice, give some examples from our own work, and share our favorite resources
to help you pull it all together.
An audio CD is a powerful and inexpensive way to promote your practice. Typically
costing less than a color brochure, an audio CD has high perceived value and
gives your prospects a strong experience of you that no website or brochure
can match.
Here is an example of what a promotional audio CD can do for you:
Two weeks
ago we brought a supply of our introductory CD Five Secrets of a
Successful Practice to a conference to give away to folks that
signed up for our newsletter. We brought 20% more than we thought we would need,
based upon the size of this conference and past experience. We ran out of CDs
halfway through the conference and collected twice as many leads as any previous
conference, mostly because we were giving away this CD. When we got home, we
had our kids address and mail CDs to the folks that signed up after we ran out.
A good problem to have!
Do you think we would have gotten the same result with a brochure? Giving away
balloons or pens? No way!
So here is what we would like you to know about creating a promotional audio
CD:
Step One: Identify the biggest possible problem or
goal of target audience and craft compelling title.
The title of your CD is like the headline in a newspaper - you want to pull
the prospect in and have them saying to themselves - "I gotta get that!"
Recommended Resource: Check out Writing Winning
Headlines in David's book How
to Build Your Ideal Practice in 90 Days and Jeff's article- How
to Write 'Goodnight It's Time to Sleep' Titles vs. 'I Gotta Have that Right
Now' Titles
Step Two: Write an article or white paper to clarify
and refine your thinking. Use steps and bullet points.
This can be the beginning of a script for your recording.
Recommended Resource: For 20 ideas and templates to write
your article script check out The Article Guy's 20
Article Writing Templates
Step Three: Record content by giving seminar,
or have someone interview you, or read from script
Turn on our speakers and visit www.ConsciousDating.com
to listen to the following examples:
- Live Seminar: See F`ree
Audio Programs recorded from live, in-person seminars (programs #1,
#2, and #3) using a digital
recorder and lapel mic
- Live Tele-seminar: See F`ree
Audio Programs recorded from a live tele-seminar using a telephone
recording adaptor, computer sound card, and audio
recording/editing software (program #4)
- Recorded from script: See Home
Page on the right for an example recorded in a studio from a script
- Interview format: See Home
Page on the left for an interview format recorded in a studio from a
live conference call (in this case I scripted the questions and answers
ahead of time)
Note: For promotional CDs that you give away, you can record
it yourself using your computer or digital
recorder. Be sure to record using the highest fidelity setting possible,
preferably uncompressed (such as a WAV file). For creating a retail CD,
using a recording studio is best, such as this
example which retails for $14.95 (Amazon listing may not be fully functional
at this writing). At $100-$150.00 per hour, a recording studio is inexpensive
and a good investment for a quality recording. Look up "Audio-Visual
Production Services" in your local phone book. For example, in my
area (Northern California) I'm very happy with Wave
Group.
Step Four: Create an audio file for CD by editing content
(verbal clutter, noise), break into tracks, add transitional music
Recommended Resources:
- For f'ree audio recording and editing software, check out Audacity
- For f`ree music to use for your intro, transitions, and closing, check
out the loops at www.Flashkit.com
Step Five: Burn CD, design label, and send to duplication
service
Recommended Resource: Nationwide
CD- 866-704-3579, ask for Blue Richardson
1000 bulk CDs for $494.00 (49 cents each) everything included except shipping
Other Recommended Resources (we
did the research so you don't have to!)
Conclusion
We sincerely believe the promotional CD to be one of the best examples of marketing
by providing value, and one of the best investments you can make for marketing
your practice. We've produced enough of them to know how powerful the results
can be, and the above steps and resources are exactly what we have used successfully.

recommending them. We use them, like them, and trust them, after much expensive
trial and error.
